A new interpretation and education centre in the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site
Discover Greenwich is a £5.8 million project that will tell the continuing story of the Old Royal Naval College and Maritime Greenwich. It will explore the history of the buildings and landscapes and reveal the people who lived and worked there.
Opening late 2009, Discover Greenwich will include an exhibition hall, a learning suite and a temporary exhibition gallery, all located in the Pepys Building (current Visitor Centre). The refurbished building will also house a shop, a café, and a Tourist Information Centre. Work on the Pepys Building will start in autumn 2008.
The new exhibition will focus on architecture and learning; illuminating a visit to both the Old Royal Naval College and the whole World Heritage Site. Historic artefacts, contemporary and replica artworks, interactive and hands-on activities, models, film footage and oral reminiscences will be used to engage and excite visitors.

The new education suite is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences and will enable increasing numbers of school children and local people to participate in a range of specialist workshops run by the Greenwich Foundation’s education team.
Together with the refurbished Cutty Sark and Greenwich Pier, Discover Greenwich will create a focus for visitors approaching the World Heritage Site from the north, ready for 2012 when Greenwich will host the equestrian Olympics.

Oral Histories: Collecting memories for Discover Greenwich
We are collecting memories and stories of people connected with the Old Royal Naval College over past generations; whether from local people who remember it as a hidden gem, who worked there in a support capacity (such as catering or maintenance) or who attended courses at the Royal Naval College. Selected memories will then be incorporated into Discover Greenwich displays and the accompanying archive.
If you have an interesting recollection or story about the Old Royal Naval College that you would like to share with others please complete this
Oral History Form (28 KB) and return to the Foundation’s project team.
We will regularly update this website with the latest news, interesting stories and how else you can help.
